‘커밍 업 쇼트’로 많은 주목을 받았던 사회학자 제니퍼 M. 실바가 탄광촌 노동자들의 현실과 정치적 가능성을 모색한 두 번째 저서 ‘사라질 수 없는 사람들’로 국내 독자들을 찾는다.

문예출판사가 펴낸 사라질 수 없는 사람들은 양극화와 불평등이 가속하는 시대에 거의 사라져가는 노동계급의 목소리에 귀를 기울인다. 노동계급은 늘 정부 정책의 수동적 수혜자 정도로만 취급받아왔다. 그러나 어려운 현실을 벗어나 더 나은 미래로 나아가려는 노동계급은 부자들과 마찬가지로 감정, 명예, 존엄을 가진 자들이다. 당사자의 삶에 대한 깊이 있는 이해에 기반하지 않은 모든 정책은 실패할 수밖에 없다.

이에 제니퍼 M. 실바는 섬세하고 배려 깊은 인터뷰로 노동계급 구성원이 마주한 고난이 무엇인지, 그들은 그 고난을 어떻게 대처해나가는지를 조명한다. 또 이들을 백인 남성과 여성, 흑인 및 라틴계 남성과 여성의 네 집단으로 나눠 내부 차이에도 주목한다. 각 인구 집단이 삶, 미래, 자아를 이해하는 방식에서 나타나는 차이는 노동계급을 위한 정치가 단순하고 평면적인 차원을 넘어서 복잡하고 정교하게 기획돼야 한다는 점을 알려준다.

이런 치밀한 검토 아래 저자는 노동계급 모두를 아우르는 정치적 기획으로 나아간다. 가난한 노동계급은 그 어느 때보다 정치적 연대가 필요한 상황임에도 파편화돼 개별적으로 생존 전략을 구사하고 있다. 신자유주의의 물결이 노조, 정당, 지역 사회, 공동체, 이웃 등 전통적 준거점을 앗아갔기 때문이다. 이들은 자기 계발에 탐닉하고 개별적으로 구원을 갈구하며, 누구도 자신을 대변해주지 않는다는 박탈감에 선거를 포함한 모든 공적 제도를 불신한다.

나아가 별다른 노력 없이 정부가 제공하는 혜택으로만 생활하는 사람들을 경멸하며 자신을 그런 사람과 구분하고자 한다. 좋은 삶은 자신의 노력과 헌신을 통해서만 가능해질 수 있다고 믿는다. 가난이 부른 현실적 어려움과 문화적 수치심을 개인 탓으로 돌리며 자기 자신을 책임의 주체로 내세운다.

기성 정치에서 이탈한 노동자들의 근원에는 고통이 있다. 저자는 자조, 경멸, 분노, 냉소, 희망이 교차하는 탄광촌에서 ‘고통을 중심으로 구축된 친밀감’을 바탕으로 새로운 정치적 가능성을 탐색한다. 고통받는 존재라는 동질감을 바탕으로 ‘우리’라는 감각을 형성해 정치적 주체로 거듭날 수 있다는 것이다.

고통을 수치스러워하는 대신 모두의 경험으로 의미화하면 가장 낮고 어두운 곳에서도 사회적 유대의 가능성이 싹틀 수 있다. 제니퍼 M. 실바는 책에서 “변화의 가능성은 고통 당사자들이 공동체를 꾸릴 때 찾아온다”고 강조한다. 공동체의 자원은 가난한 노동계급이 공유하는 계급적 고통이다. 아메리칸드림이라는 낡은 희망 모델이 더는 작동하지 않는 스산한 탄광촌. 이들의 목소리에 귀를 기울인다면 새로운 동맹과 미지의 가능성을 발견할 수 있을 것이다.
